DCSAA RECOMMENDATIONS FOR
THE RETURN TO HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the Mayor of the District of Columbia’s Order lifting the prohibition on high-contact sports with no COVID-19 restrictions beginning Friday, May 21, 2021, the DC State Athletic Association will permit high school student-athletes to participate in skill development drills, practice and compete in all sports. The DCSAA makes these strong recommendations:

  • All coaches and student-athletes should get vaccinated as soon as possible. This is the best way to stop the spread of COVID-19 and ensure one remains in good health.
  • Unvaccinated coaches and student-athletes should continue to wear a mask over their mouth and nose while participating in any athletic-related activity, including conditioning drills, practice and games.
  • Unvaccinated coaches and student-athletes should continue to wear a mask over their mouth and nose if they are part of a team but are not participating in the contest or practice – if they are on the sidelines, courtside, pool deck, etc.
  • If an unvaccinated coach or student-athlete is identified as having had a possible exposure to the COVID-19 virus, that individual must quarantine for 10 to 14 days, per DC Health guidelines.

As always, Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and/or member schools may have more stringent COVID-19 protocols in place. Coaches and student-athletes should check with their LEA and/or member school administrations for additional restrictions, such as mask requirements and spectator limitations. “It has been a long 15 months,” DCSAA Executive Director Clark Ray said. “The DCSAA sincerely appreciates everyone’s patience during this time and their advocacy on behalf of all student-athletes. Our goal is to safely return to competition and maximize the experience for all student-athletes.”
