DCSAA Mourns Passing of Fletcher L. Tinsley

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The DC State Athletic Association mourns the passing of longtime teacher, coach and official Fletcher L. Tinsley, who helped shape countless DC teenagers throughout his career. Tinsley passed away on September 10. He was 74 years old.

A 1966 graduate of Coolidge High School in Northwest Washington, Tinsley starred in track, a top-ranked hurdler and quarter-miler who also ran track at Central State University in Ohio. Following graduation, Tinsley returned to DC and began what would become a 35-year coaching and teaching career.

Tinsley coached elementary, junior high and high school track and field, achieving great success coaching the Dunbar High girls track and field team. The Dunbar track was later dedicated in his honor. Tinsley also received countless community service awards and worked as a volleyball and track official, co-founded the Anacostia Youth Athletic Club, organized the Cheerleading Club of Washington and founded the Capital Board of Officials to promote sportsmanship through officiating.

“The DCSAA sends its condolences to Mr. Tinsley’s family,” DCSAA Executive Director Kenny Owens said. “We also remember the incredible impact on the lives of so many youngsters who were fortunate enough to have him as a teacher in the classroom or a coach on the track or in life.”
