The cheers grew louder with each point late in the No. 4 singles final between Sidwell Friends junior Anatoly Brevnov and Potomac School senior Justin Kuo. As Brevnov looked around at the crowd at the Potomac School tennis courts Saturday morning in McLean, he realized that he was in the clinching match of the Mid-Atlantic Conference boys’ tennis tournament.
“I figured it out when everyone was lining up outside the fence,” he said. “It was pretty scary.”
After a pep talk during a changeover from Quakers Coach Octavio Delasobera and teammate Henry Wessel, Brevnov turned his nervousness into positive energy and closed out the match, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch a 4-3 victory for Sidwell Friends over rival Potomac School.
