Wilson goalie Simon Birnstad could have taken the news the wrong way. After splitting time in net during the regular season, the junior learned last week that Coach Whitney Minnis had chosen teammate Lazaro Cardenas to be the Tigers’ goalkeeper throughout the playoffs.
But it’s not in Birnstad’s nature to pout, and that trait served the Wilson boys’ soccer team well when Cardenas went down with a head injury during the first half of Wednesday’s D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association championship game. Called into duty, Birnstad refused to shrink from the moment.
