Football: Wilson & Woodson Set For Friday Night Showdown

For a few fleeting seconds, Wilson quarterback Steven Williams Jr. felt like Superman, soaring through the air over an H.D. Woodson defender for a highlight-reel touchdown in last year’s Turkey Bowl. But then came the ankle injury, the one that effectively ruined the Tigers’ title hopes, and left him doubled over in pain and, “mad at myself really,” he said this week.

Williams and the rest of Wilson’s football team have been longing for redemption ever since. The Tigers went undefeated against D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association competition during the 2015 regular season, but few remember that in light of last year’s 40-24 loss to Woodson, which was more lopsided than the final score indicated.

And so, with a rematch on tap Friday night in Northeast Washington, Wilson’s motivation this week — and the rest of the season — is obvious: Dethrone the three-time defending Turkey Bowl champions, once and for all.
