Jacob Long caught the inbounds pass, surveyed the court and began making his way toward the hoop. When a second defender closed in, the Cesar Chavez senior realized someone else had to be open, so he kicked it out to the left corner to Lamont Tate.

With time winding down and the coaches behind him shouting to pull the trigger, the fearless freshman fired away and drained the game-winning three-pointer in the Eagles’ 63-62 comeback victory over Theodore Roosevelt on Saturday.

The Eagles (17-6) can space the floor as well any D.C. public school team and have developed a small ball identity this winter behind senior Keleaf Tate, Lamont Tate (Kaleaf’s brother), junior Lawrence Martin, senior Troy Johnson and Long. They’ve also developed a winning identity, with victories in their last seven games.
