After kicking away from the field to win the girls’ 1,600 in 5:41.02, Wilson’s Zakyrah Haynie hardly had time to catch her breath before toeing the line for the 500 on Wednesday at the DCIAA indoor track and field championships at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.
Haynie, who made her move with 300 meters to go in the 1,600, cut it even closer in the 500, drawing on a fraction-of-a-second loss to McKinley’s Melady Brown at a meet in December as motivation to edge Brown down the stretch this time. She credited advice from assistant coach Desmond Dunham.
