Rebecca Frye would always notice the the banners when she walked into Coach Bill Pribac’s office, whether it was for captains meetings, pregame talks or strategy sessions.
When the St. John’s junior’s phone blew up with emails and Twitter notifications at the end of class on Tuesday morning, she found out that she had joined the school’s storied volleyball history by winning D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year.
A St. John’s player has been named Gatorade Player of the Year in volleyball seven times with six different athletes, including recent alumni Jeanne Westney (2015-16) and Becca Bateman (2013-14, 2012-13). Sisters Darian Dozier (2011-12), Kristen Dozier (2005-06) and Jourdan Dozier (2004-05) also received the award.
