At the start of every practice, the Theodore Roosevelt boys’ basketball team runs for about 15 minutes before lining up at the baseline for sprints. First, the players have to make it the full length of the court and back in less than 8.6 seconds. When they all beat that time, they move on to 8.5 seconds, then 8.4, then 8.3.

“We’re used to it by now since we’ve been running it since the summer time,” senior forward Donald Brewer said. That stamina and conditioning has been on full display for the Rough Riders (16-7) during their recent five-game win streak.

Roosevelt Coach Rob Nickens likes his players to turn games into track meets, running a full-court press and constantly pushing the tempo so they can capitalize on their fitness advantage in the second half. That paves the way for high-scoring games such as Friday’s 102-82 road victory over Coolidge.
