Trailing at halftime, the second-ranked St. John’s girls’ basketball team turned to its halfcourt trap against No. 4 Elizabeth Seton in hopes of throwing the visitors off their game Saturday in Northwest D.C.

The defense proved withering, and the Roadrunners ran out of answers by the fourth quarter.

The Cadets pulled away for a 52-43 win, fueled by the trapping defense. Its methods are pretty simple: Once the ballhandler crosses midcourt, the Cadets swarm.

“As soon as they cross halfcourt, we go” said senior guard Aisha Sheppard, who led the Cadets with 13 points. “That’s really the goal of the defense, to speed them up and make them do things they don’t want to do.”
