As Maeve Carroll walked toward center court to join her teammates for pictures after Georgetown Visitation’s 56-48 victory over Bullis, the student section began serenading her with a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” It wasn’t as if the Cubs senior needed another reason to celebrate, however, after winning her fourth ISL AA title and extending the school’s streak to 11.

“It’s the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten,” Carroll, who turned 18 on Sunday, said of the championship victory.

After falling behind 37-29 in the third quarter, No. 8 Georgetown Visitation (25-3) rebounded in a big way thanks to a dominant effort on the glass that was led by Carroll. The fourth-year starter scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed six offensive rebounds to break the Cubs out of their second-half slump and help them pull away with the victory.

“We just knew we had to get it together, and we knew we needed to pound it inside. I think we all just came together,” Carroll said.

Sophomore Naia Saddler made four three-pointers and finished with 14 points to help Bullis (20-7) go into halftime tied at 29. Maqui Carrillo added 12, and 6-foot-3 senior forward Victoria Crawford had seven while protecting the paint on defense.

But the Cubs began to figure out Bullis’s defense midway through the third quarter. Carroll crashed the glass to create second-chance opportunities, and sophomore forward Ellie Mitchell (13 points) helped get Crawford into foul trouble as Georgetown pulled away in the fourth quarter.
