The local legend of Chris Lykes was born in December 2013, when GonzagaCoach Steve Turner looked down his bench, pointed to his 5-foot-6 freshman and tossed him onto one of high school basketball’s biggest stages.
The Eagles opened their conference schedule at O’Connell, then led by current Maryland Terrapins standout guard Melo Trimble. Gonzaga needed a burst of scoring, so Turner looked to Lykes, a ballhandler with flash and grit, quick enough to get to the basket at will, smart enough to keep the Eagles out of trouble — the coach hoped.
