While Luka Garza wrestled with Myles Dread at the elbow, Chris Lykes crept behind Garza and readied to pounce.
Once the 6-foot-11 Garza lowered the ball, the 5-foot-8 Lykes knocked it out of his hands and raced in the other direction. Lykes lobbed a pass to Prentiss Hubb , who flushed in a dunk in Gonzaga’s 77-66 win over Maret at George Washington’s Smith Center on Sunday. The victory earned the No. 2 Eagles the DC State Athletic Association boys’ title, their second championship of the week after winning the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference on Monday.
Lykes’s steal and Hubb’s dunk stretched Gonzaga’s lead to 12 late in the fourth, but the Eagles had to overcome Garza’s game-high 37 points. The key was limiting the Iowa commit whenever possible and, more importantly, shutting down everyone else.
