Bell Multicultural High School basketball and soccer senior standout Miamour Mesa has been named the District of Columbia State Athletic Association U.S. Army Impact Player of the Month for February.

Sgt. Alden Rhaburn of the U.S. Army presented the award to Mesa in front of an audience of her teammates and classmates.

"It feels really great; it's a great accomplishment," said Mesa, who was nominated for the award by Bell athletic director Desmond Alexander.

Girls' basketball head coach Derrick Davis said Mesa is the perfect selection for the award.

"She works hard on and off the field," Davis said. "She works hard in the classroom and is at practice every day. This award is for her; it's what she does, so it's a great accomplishment."

Mesa has excelled on the basketball court and the soccer field for the Griffins.

As a junior, she was named second-team DCSAA All-State for basketball and was also named team MVP.

As a senior, Mesa was named the MVP of the girls' soccer team, and she led the state with 31 goals.

While many high school athletes choose to specialize in just one sport, Mesa has enjoyed participating in multiple sports and encourages her peers to do the same.

"It helps me become a well-rounded person, and it helps me manage my time," Mesa said.

Mesa, who holds a 3.7 GPA, said she would like to continue to play soccer and basketball at the collegiate level, though she is still undecided as to where.
